Hello! While writing my second manga I wanted to make a record of the process so I could share with you. Now, I haven’t read a great deal of manga in my time nor did I read any tutorials or ask any artists. That, I think, goes a great way toward explaining how my first one turned out…. Anyway, let’s take a look at the process!

The first one started with a short story. Except for the image of Milo, I had no visuals in my head. Here is the original story:

昔々、小さい村に地霊(ちれい)という女の子は、住んでいました。

Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Chi-rei (meaning ‘Earth Spirit’) in a small village.

地霊は、あの村がしずかすぎたのでよく詰まらなかったです。

For Chirei, that village was too quiet and boring.

妹がいたのに、地霊は、さびしかったです。

Although she had a little sister, Chirei was lonely.

空を見ながら原で横たわりました。

She looked at the sky while she lay down in the field.

「あたしは、空で上がれたいな。」と言いました。「雲の上で舞い上がるのは、楽しいと思う。」

“I wish I could rise to the sky,” she said. “I think that flying on the tops of the clouds would be fun.”

それから空から大きくてオレンジな猫は、土まで来ました。

Just then a big, orange cat came from the sky to the ground.

地霊はびっくりして、呼びました。

Chirei was surprised and cried out.

猫は、草で座ったり笑ったりしました。

The cat sat on the grass and grinned at her.

地霊がまだびっくりしたから、話せませんでした。

Because Chirei was still surprised, she couldn’t speak.

猫は、「あなたは、舞い上がるができようになりたいか。」と聞きました。

The cat asked her, “Do you want to become able to fly?”

地霊は、「は．．．はい、そうです。」と答えました。「すみませんが、猫様の名前は、何ですか。」と聞きました。

Chirei answered, “Y—yes, that is so. Excuse me, honorable Mr. Cat, but what is your name, sir?”

重くて大きいい声で猫は、「おれは、猫鳥(びょうちょう)だ。どうぞ。」と答えました。

With a deep and booming voice, the cat answered, “I’m Byōchō (‘Catbird’). How goes it?”

「あれ？お名前は、病蝶(びょうちょう)ですか。ざんえんですね。」

“What? Your name means ‘Sick Butterfly?’ How regrettable.”

「いや、おれの名前は「猫鳥」と書いてびょうちょうと読む。病気の蝶とはちがうよ。じゃあ、あなたの名前は、何ですか。」

“No. My name means ‘Flying Cat”, not Sick butterfly. So what’s your name?”

「あと、私は、地霊と申します。よろしくおねがいします。」

Umm… I am called Chirei. Pleased to meet you, sir.”

猫は、「えぇ、千涙(ちれい)か。なんだいよ。」と言いました。

The cat said, “Huh? Your name means ‘A thousand tears?’ That’s problematic!”

 

Sometimes, names can be difficult to understand, eh?

時々名前は、わかりにくいですね。

 

会話の後で、地霊と猫鳥(びょうちょう)は、空の中に舞い上がりました。

After their conversation, Chirei and Byōchō soared through the sky.

その内、空気がさむいになりました。地霊は、地へ帰らなければいけませんでした。猫鳥は地霊を家まで送りしました。

Eventually the air became cold. Chirei needed to return to the ground. Byōchō took Chirei back to her house.

地霊は、「送っていただいてありがとうございます。」と言いました。

Chirei said to him, “For giving me a ride, I thank you.”

「ええ、かっこいいね。」

“Yeah, it’s cool.”

Before moving to the next step I had a Japanese friend edit the translation for me. Some sentences were almost perfect. Others… well…

昔々、小さい村に地霊(ちれい)という女の子は、住んでいました。

昔々、ある小さい村に地霊という女の子が住んでいました。

Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Chi-rei (meaning ‘Earth Spirit’) in a small village.

 

地霊は、あの村がしずかすぎたのでよくつまらなかったです。

その村は静かすぎたので地霊にとっては退屈(たいくつ) (=bored)でした。

For Chirei, that village was too quiet and boring.

 

妹がいたのに、地霊は、さびしかったです。

妹がいても地霊はさみしかったのです。

Although she had a little sister, Chirei was lonely.

 

空を見ながら原で横たわりました。

地霊は(→better put the subject at the beginning of this sentence) 空を見ながら、野原に横たわりました。

She looked at the sky while she lay down in the field.

 

「あたしは、空で上がれたいな。」と言いました。「雲の上で舞い上がるのは、楽しいと思う。」

「空に舞い上がれたらいいのにな。雲の上で飛び回れたらどんなに楽しいだろう。」と地霊は言いました。

“I wish I could rise to the sky,” she said. “I think that flying on the tops of the clouds would be fun.”

 

それから空から大きくてオレンジな猫は、土まで来ました。

そしたら大きなオレンジ色の猫が、空から地面にむかって落ちてきました。

Just then a big, orange cat came from the sky to the ground.

 

地霊はびっくりして、呼びました。

地霊はびっくりして叫(さけ)び声をあげました。

                                 * 叫(さけ)び声をあげる (=cried out by surprise or fear）

Chirei was surprised and cried out.

 

猫は、草で座ったり笑ったりしました。

猫は草の上にすわって地霊ににんやりと笑いかけました。 * にんやりと笑う (=grin)

The cat sat on the grass and grinned at her.

 

地霊がまだびっくりしたから、話せませんでした。

地霊は驚いたままで何も話すことができませんでした。

Or 地霊は驚いたままで何も言葉が出ませんでした。

　　　　　　　　　　　*言葉が出ない (=become speechless)

Because Chirei was still surprised, she couldn’t speak.

 

猫は、「あなたは、舞い上がるができようになりたいか。」と聞きました。

その猫は地霊に「空を飛べるようになりたいかい？」とたずねました。

The cat asked her, “Do you want to become able to fly?”

 

地霊は、「は．．．はい、そうです。」と答えました。「あと、私は、地霊と申します。よろしくおねがいします。」

地霊は「は、はい、そうです。すみません。猫様のお名前は何ですか？」と聞きました。

Chirei answered, “Y—yes, that is so. Excuse me, honorable Mr. Cat, but what is your name, sir?”

 

重くて大きいい声で猫は、「おれは、猫鳥(びょうちょう)だ。どうぞ。」と答えました。

猫は低いうなり声で「オレの名前は猫鳥(びょうちょう)というんだ。」と答えました。

With a deep and booming voice, the cat answered, “I’m Byōchō (‘Catbird’). How goes it?”

 

「あれ？お名前は、病蝶(びょうちょう)ですか。ざんえん　=残念(ざんねん)ですね。」

「あら、あなたのお名前は病蝶(びょうちょう)っていうの？かわいそうね。」

“What? Your name means ‘Sick Butterfly?’ How regrettable.”

 

「いや、おれの名前は「猫の鳥」と書いてびょうちょうと読むのさ。病気(びょうき)の蝶(ちょう)とはちがうよ。じゃあ、君の名前は何？」

“No. My name means ‘Flying Cat”, not Sick butterfly.” So what’s your name?

 

「えっと、それから私の名前は地霊といいます。どうぞよろしくおねがいします。」と答えました。

“Umm… I am called Chirei. Pleased to meet you, sir.”

 

猫は、「えぇ、千涙(ちれい)か。なんだいよ。」と言いました。

猫は「ええっ？君の名前は千涙(ちれい)っていうの？千粒(せんつぶ)の涙(なみだ)？どういうこと？」と言いました。

The cat said, “Huh? Your name means ‘A thousand tears?’ That’s problematic!”

 

時々名前は、わかりにくいですね。

「ああ、時々名前はわかりにくいですね。」と言って地霊と猫は微笑みあいました。

“Sometimes names can be difficult to understand. eh?” both said and smiled at each other.

 

会話の後で、地霊と猫鳥(びょうちょう)は、空の中に舞い上がりました。

会話のあと、地霊と猫鳥は一緒に空の中に舞い上がりました。

　　　(→I added ‘together’一緒に)

After their conversation, Chirei and Byōchō soared through the sky.

 

その内、空気がさむいになりました。地霊は、地へ帰らなければいけませんでした。猫鳥は地霊を家まで送りしました。

そのうち空気がだんだんと冷たくなってきたので、地霊は地面に降りなくてはなりませんでした。猫鳥は地霊を家まで送ってあげました。

Eventually the air became cold. Chirei needed to return to the ground. Byōchō took Chirei back to her house.

 

地霊は「今日はとても楽しかったです。どうもありがとう。」と猫鳥に言いました。

“I had a such wonderful time with you today, thank you very much.” Chirei said to Byocho.

 

「ええ、かっこいいね。」

“Yeah, it’s cool.”

So, I’m certainly glad that I had a native Japanese speaker correct this for me. Otherwise, my story could have sounded like, “Chirei girl meet big cat. Him orange and fluffy. Me rike fruffy kitty.” Anyhoo, now that I had the story completed, it was time for drawing. “Oh joy,” sarcastically said my non-artistic self, “The best part is that I won’t even have an editor for the art!” So let’s take a look at that, shall we?
